Headway Birmingham & Solihull are a leading ABI – Acquired Brain Injury Charity.


We are looking for a support worker who is able/willing to learn to drive our minibus


Support workers are part of our ABI Services Team, who run services/activities for adults with acquired brain injury at our 3 hubs across Birmingham.

The role involves ensuring clients and staff are safely driven to and from their destination and supported to take part in the community activities as part of their rehabilitation. This will all be under the guidance of our Brain Injury Coaches and Activity Assistants who will lead the groups.

Main Base/Area: Birmingham & Solihull - Monday & Tuesday based at our Hub in Moseley, Wednesday & Thursday based at our hub in Rubery  however the candidate must be prepared to work at any Headway Birmingham & Solihull site (Moseley, Rubery and Wylde Green) on pre-agreed occasions as required and willing to cover other drivers leave sometimes on non-working days to ensure that the service always has drivers.

Salary: starting at £11,741.60 pa for a 20-hour week - dependent on experience (HBS Grade 4 pay spine 1)

Hours: 20 hours per week – Usually Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday 9.45-2.45 each day – some flexibility required to meet the needs of the charity/services.

Duties include: -

  • Load clients on the bus using the correct procedures and ensuring that client risks are observed when seating.

  • Plan journeys ensure that departure/arrival times meet activity & other hub requirements.

  • Be responsible for vehicle security and for completing the required vehicle check sheets.

  • Drive the mini-bus safely and legally at all times.

  • To take an active role in activities with clients, encouraging them to participate and supporting them to participate as instructed by the staff in charge.

  • Complete personal care and domestic tasks as required

  • Ensure the mini-bus remains safe, legal and tidy, reporting any concerns immediately to manager.

  • Part of normal duties will be to cover in the absence of the other Driver/Escort and plan for these where possible.

  • Where driving is occasionally not required on the day, be willing to help at the hub, by supporting clients in their group sessions or doing domestic tasks.

  • Support clients to achieve their goals in their sessions/activities

Experience and requirements: -

  • Experience with disability preferred

  • Willing to undertake all required training for the role.

  • D1 minibus license,however if willing to train to get D1 this would be considered

  • Must have car driving license

  • NVQ2 health and social care achieved or willing to get in the first 2 years of employment

The successful candidate will require an enhanced DBS disclosure. Disclosure expense to be met by employer.
