Simon Tricklebank's Story

My name is Simon Tricklebank and I had three strokes in 2008 which left me with impaired movement down my left side, difficulty speaking and impaired vision.

Since joining the Sports inclusion and Community Steps in 2014 I have attended a variety of social events and sports groups.

The swimming at Tudor Grange in the evening has not only increased my movement and improved my balance it has helped me to regain some of the confidence I lost following the strokes. I improved so much in my swimming I was presented with a cup from Solihull Seals. Lynne and I are now also on the committee for the swimming club.

This new found confidence prompted me to attend the disability archery club where I have progressed tremendously with my stance and aim and am now able to stand to shoot instead of sitting as I did initially and I regularly score high marks despite my impairment of vision caused by my stroke.

I have now attended the inclusive cycling club for over a year. I have been able to re learn to ride a bicycle and have built up both my core strength and cardiac fitness. I started off on a tricycle and my aim is to gradually start to aim to learn to ride a two wheel bicycle. I have already, with assistance, used a two wheeled balance bike. The cycling sessions are also attended by my wife and parents in law. We all ride bicycles together. There are not many opportunities for us all to do things independently but in a group together and it has helped all of us with our fitness.

I find the Steps groups invaluable as I get to meet new people and spend time with my wife Lynne who has been a great support to me over the past few years. I recently enjoyed spending an afternoon with her and other Headway West Midlands service users and their carers watching the Pantomime at the Birmingham Hippodrome and going out for a meal afterwards
